Learn Spanish via. SMART?

SMART is systemized approach to learning that can make you feel a little more in control giving you a much better sense of your learning progression. When it comes to learning Spanish via. online audio or any Spanish program SMART is a great tool to use...and it's free.

This approach is based on "Kolb's learning Theory" (1984) simply put, it's a learning system of feeling, planning, doing and reviewing.

How does this apply to learning Spanish online?
Before going into detail, you can use SMART with about any type of learn spanish programe i.e. e-books, Learn Spanish Audio Books, video, tutorials, etc. Ebooks or learn Spanish Audio books are for the most part great practice tools and a great way of supplementing tutorials or other language exercise activities. However in my experience, e-books as stand alone method won't replace a good Learn Spanish online audio course. You will still need to find a way to practice phrases and learn to understand the vocabulary in those learn Spanish Audio books.

You're faced with the unavoidable; you are going to have to choose an Audio spanish course, preferably a complete Spanish video or audio program with exercises and pronunciation drills.

As a Spanish language learner and English teacher I know the challenge you face and can offer a few tips on free trail learn Spanish Audio downloads and some advice in how to make your Spanish learning targets SMART.

S: Specific
First, be sure to set yourself a target of exactly what you want to achieve, start small. Learning a new language can be intimidating, overwhelming and uncomfortable.

Here's an example:

  • Identify 3 and least try 1 online learn Spanish audio courses. Rocket Spanish, Tell Me more Spanish, and Pimsluer Spanish audio great starting points.
  • Choose and listen to one chapter of a learn Spanish Audio book or Spanish Audio ebook.
  • Listen to Spanish language music in the car
  • Listen to a short Argentine, Mexican (which ever is more relevant to you) news broadcast online each day.

M: Measurable
You can set yourself some simple tasks, keep them very definite and black and white. These are things that either you will or will not do, half measure will not work here.

Examples:

  • To complete the Rocket Spanish learn spanish online audio free trial.
  • Commit to know ALL Spanish personal pronouns.
  • To read 1 article from your learn Spanish Magazine

A: Attainable
This is so Important: Im one of these people that really wants to run before I can walk, take a moment to consider the hare and the tortoise. Your goals have got to be achievable if you set yourself an unattainable goal you're going to feel pretty bad about yourself, learning Spanish and your learn Spanish audio course.

Keep it real! Language learning is difficult and if your over 28 your memory is unlikely to retain as much as it once did. These things take time.

R: Relevant
Your interests and motivation for learning, absolutely effect the way you will respond an audio Spanish course, Spanish ebook or any other Learn Spanish audio material.

I recently embarked on listening to a Paulo Coelho Spanish Audio book. I'm not a fan of his work in English, so my motivation to understand it in Spanish was low. The key is to try to:

  • Identify Spanish Audio that is of interest to you.
  • Listen the Genre of music you like but in Spanish.
  • Choose your Spanish Audio in the most relevant Spanish accent.

Audio Spanish courses are a great learning tool for you. You can supplement whatever program, exercises or tutorials you choose with some free online Spanish radio, TV or magazines.

T: Time Scaled
Language learning for adults is for the most part a long term endeavor. Which is why statements like “learn Spanish in 3 months" or "6 weeks” need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Obviously, these statements are sales pitches. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that their programs are bad even though their time scales are for most of us, totally unrealistic.

Time scales should always take into consideration your lifestyle. We are all different. Some people are going to have more time than others. If you only have two hours of free time a day you probably do not need to spend all that time learning Spanish online or chanting Spanish phrases

Equally if you over commit yourself time wise and are unable to maintain your ambitious self expectations, you may feel like you have let yourself down and give up all together. You need to remain flexible and consider that we all have periods of greater or lesser pressure on our time. Remember that learning a second language takes years so little and often is a great way to learn.

The Kolb theory for learning is brilliant. Yet, what I think he missed and what I would like to add is the importance of accountability and help from others. We all experience periods of high and low motivation so learning with a family member of friend will help you stay motivated, help you practice. So, don't be shy to share your goals with those who you know will help and keep you on track when you need it.

I hate to use this cliche but in does ring true especially when endeavoring to learn Spanish online. But the reality is if you fail to plan you plan to fail. So, use this SMART plan for learning Spanish audio!
